2009 a year to remember
Anglers on Fort Peck Reservoir had a year to remember in 2009 with good prospects for just as good a year in 2010.
The big news was the rising lake level throughout the spring and summer which flooded shoreline vegetation. Flooding vegetation does several things for a fishery. The newly covered grass, weeds and bushes provide a place for perch and northern pike to string their eggs. It also provides safe rearing areas for all fish species to help survive their first year of life. And, finally, it provides a strong attraction for predators.
As anglers, we were able to key in on those shallow walleyes. We found a bountiful crop of small fish and eaters. We also found the big ones who were in there taking advantage of the forage.
Fish numbers were strong with good age groups ready to move up the ladder toward trophy sizes. Look for that trend to continue into 2010 thanks to the good water year in 2009.
Lake trout fishing was excellent as well. Higher water levels allow lake trout to make use of more of the dam, which is their spawning area. Just-stocked chinook salmon were also making the most of the shallow vegetation last year to survive their first year and that bodes well for salmon fishing in the falls of 2010 and 2011.
All in all, we enjoyed a great year in 2009. And by all indications, 2010 should be a great year, too.
